ARTIST STATEMENT:
I am an engineer and BIM/VDC Manager for a construction company in Tampa, Florida. My work involves coordinating 3D computer models of mechanical systems within the building models.
I am also a professional photographer specializing in sports, landscape, travel, wildlife and architectural photography. My brother-in-law is a mineral dealer and I helped him guide tour groups on excursions collecting minerals throughout South Africa, Madagascar and Namibia. This gave me the opportunity to discover the many beautiful vistas in these countries, especially Namibia.
I used my experiences and friendships there to begin offering photo safaris throughout Namibia.
This magnificent pair of images are of ancient camelthorn trees that dies over 900 years ago. They are still standing because their long roots are deeply embedded in the hard clay of the dried lakebed. The tree has not decomposed because the Namib desert is too dry to support the microorganisms that cause decay.
The stark contrast of this photo is caused by the black trees which are scorched by the constant exposure to the sun and the bright orange background. The background is actually a towering sand dune which is over 1000′ tall. This area has some of the tallest sand dunes in the world. The reddish orange color comes from the high iron content of the sand which is actually rust.
